Paragon is a third-person action Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) video game developed and published by Epic Games, who were also the creators behind titles such as Gears of War, for the Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 4 platforms, and was originally released as an Early Access title on March 18, 2016. On August 16, 2016 it entered its Open Beta stage, and players were free to provide feedback on it. Since then it has been in development and has been evolving through patches and character updates.

In Paragon, players assume the role of one of the 30+ “Heroes” available in the character roster. Each Hero is available for free and a single Hero can be used for the duration of a single match. All Heroes possess at least four unique abilities, and all of them have different weapons and looks. In a standard game, 10 players separated into two teams are positioned at the two ends of the map, with each end being their base and re-spawn points. The two bases are connected by three lanes: a center lane, and two corner lanes. To proceed to an enemy’s base, players have to go through defensive towers that are present on both sides of the bases, and enemy Heroes. Both teams are supported by swarms of “minions”, ally AI troops that attack in a cluster. The minions can be used as cover or distraction. Between the lanes are jungles where additional resources your Hero stats and abilities can be found.

The objective of standard game is to destroy the enemy’s “Core”, a stationary object which is present at both bases. The first team to successfully do so wins the game, and the team that turns out the victor is awarded with experience points that increase player ranking/level and provide upgrades to Hero abilities and weapons.

Despite being in Open Beta mode, Paragon does not support Pay-To-Win (P2W), a system in which players can spend real-world currency to buy weapons and abilities that give them an unfair advantage in battle. Instead, Paragon utilizes a design system that heavily supports and encourages strategic gaming and skill-rewarding. For example, players have to choose the Hero whose play-style they are most familiar with. If they prefer defense, then they can choose Heroes with high durability (but with less damage power). If they prefer to play supportive, they can choose Heroes that repair turrets and heal allies (but have less durability and attack). The maps itself are designed in a “bowl” shape, so that when player re-spawn, they can see what is happening below them in the valley or on the other base to assess the situation and form counter-strategies. This system encourages players to take a tactical approach and avoid using money to win. Only cosmetic items can be bought through money, which is the main way Epic Games earn money through this game (micro-transactions).

As of June 23, 2017, paragon is still in Open Beta mode, which news of the full version to be released not announced, but the game is still as expansive as ever with frequent updates and patches added regularly.
