Guardians of Middle-earth is an action Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) fantasy video game developed by Monolith Productions, who were also the creators behind titles such as Aliens vs Predator 2, and Zombie Studios and published by Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Microsoft Windows platformThe PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game were released on December 4, 2012. A year later on August 29, 2013, the Microsoft Windows version of the game was released.

Guardians of Middle-earth is set in the Middle-earth setting of the works done by J.R.R Tolkien, and feature several tie-ins from the original trilogy directed by Peter Jackson, such as the protagonists and antagonists like Gandalf, Radagast, and even Sauron.

In Guardians of Middle-earth, players choose from one of the 36 playable characters available in the roster, called the “guardians”. These guardians are classified as Good and Evil, with the protagonists of the original story being in the Good side and the antagonists being on the Evil side. However, this is only the general classification and does not affect their base attributes or their abilities. In GoMe, every guardian has their own unique looks and abilities. Based on that, they are categorized into 5 “roles”: Defender, Enchanter, Warrior, Striker, and Tactician. Each role provides the guardians with similar base abilities and play styles, but their attacks or abilities are independent of this grouping. All guardians have their own strengths and weaknesses, and it is up to the player to master and overcome them respectively to create streamlined, dynamic plays on the field.

In GoMe, players can form two teams of up to 5 players each and battle it out using their abilities in sync and coordination with other team members. In Guardians of Middle-earth, teamwork is a must and winning a match without it is not possible, which is why Monolith Production has balanced out character strengths and weaknesses so that the strength of one guardian might complement the weakness of other. This creates fluid, dynamic and fast-paced gameplay where the stakes are always changing and the tide can serve in favor of any team at any moment.

The objective of a standard 5v5 game in Guardians of Middle-earth is simple and takes inspiration from other MOBA titles out there like League of Legends and Dota 2. Players are placed at the ends of a map which becomes their base and their re-spawn point. Players must then move up the map to attempt to destroy the enemy’s base completely. However, players must have to face enemy guardians and defensive turrets must be destroyed to move forward. The first person to destroy the enemy team’s base wins the game, upon which they are awarded experience points that level up their profiles.

Guardians of Middle-earth has been constantly receiving updates like character add-ons and bug fixes since the day of its release, which has helped it become an expansive MOBA title. As of June 2017, no sequels, prequels or spin-offs to the game have been announced, although fans are eagerly awaiting this.
